Managing Editor, Breaking News EMEA

New Posted 27 October 2023 | London, England, United Kingdom | Bloomberg

We're looking for a dedicated, thoughtful and experienced journalist to manage our six Breaking News teams in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Someone who loves it when news is happening, and is adept at using quick thinking and the latest technology to put us ahead. Managing people is also a big part of this job, so we hope you're up for the joys and challenges of that!

As the Managing Editor of Breaking News EMEA, you will never have a dull day. From Bloomberg's regional hub in London, you'll be responsible for the group that owns the first fifteen minutes of news; stories can break unexpectedly from a broad range of sources, from regulatory filings to social media. Our teams are at the forefront of a wide array of stories; Europe's biggest companies such as Nestle and Novo Nordisk, the Israel-Hamas war, and the trials and tribulations of the UK after Brexit. When news breaks we send a quick headline within seconds and the first dispatch within minutes, with the aim of serving the real-time client; we're a flexible team who also write longer stories and contribute to the various platforms across Bloomberg News.

You may need to provide hands-on guidance for your teams amid an onslaught of news, but you should also know when to step back and give people room to maneuver and grow. You'll engage in lots of discussions with other teams to plan coverage for major events. Over the longer term, you'll come up with a strategy and vision for improving the speed, accuracy and depth of our breaking-news product. You'll also be in constant conversation with other departments including Core Product and Global Data to improve our use of AI, automation and tools.
We'll trust you to:

Have a strong sense of urgency and be sensitive to the needs of real-time clients.
Develop a culture of proactiveness, innovation and flexibility.
Be thoughtful. Be kind.
Build influential relationships with leaders across News.
Demonstrate an understanding of short-form writing and superior editing skills.
Identify future leaders and foster their development.
Anticipate issues, work across teams to find appropriate solutions, and know when to escalate accordingly.

You'll need to have:

At least 5 years of experience in a position directly managing journalists
Ability to remain calm and retain sound judgment when surprises happen
Demonstrated ability to break down silos and communicate across regions
Understanding of the potential and pitfalls of social media as a source of news
Keen interest in innovation, openness to new ideas
Flexibility and dedication, because news can happen anytime!
