You will set the tone in all things. The central desk is the heart of our newsroom across all the teams. The desk and it’s leader need to demonstrate the abilities and attributes we are driving for in the newsroom: exceptional news judgment, urgency on breaking news, and hands-on collaboration. You will ensure that quality comes first and build up the quality of writing and editing across the newsroom with collaborative, constructive feedback.
What you will do:
• Coordinate across the desks to produce stories that inform and delight our audiences. Help other news directors and team leaders decide which stories are just for lawyers or tax practitioners or government affairs staffers, and which have wider appeal on the Web or the terminal.
• Exercise independent judgment and drive teams to collaborate on stories. Sometimes that means helping to rewrite headlines or leads, sometimes that means referring stories to an editor-at-large to rewrite top to bottom, sometimes it means simply endorsing an idea so that a reporter gains confidence.
• Curate our news channels on the Bloomberg Law/Tax/Government products, on social media, and on the Bloomberg terminal. Manage staffers on the team to curate these channels as well.
• Promote our work, including to our sister teams at Bloomberg news.
• Work with team leaders across the newsroom to improve writing and reporting skills. Review stories from many teams every day. Help manage assignments as necessary and deliver feedback on stories and reporting that is constructive and thoughtful, often on tight deadlines. Assign graphics and develop audio and video ideas.
• Drive staffers to try new things and be open to change as we work to create a new culture across the news department. Serve as an aspirational role model for staffers across all news desks.
• Manage special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
You need to have:
• Exceptional news judgment, and the ability to step in and calmly assist any desk in the newsroom.
• Strong and thoughtful analytical and decision making, and the ability to assess which items need to be handled with urgency and which should be considered further.
• Demonstrated ability to develop relationships and influence news reporting and editing.
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and ability to show those skills on tight deadlines.
• Excellent headline writing and story-management skills. Ability to help conceptualize graphics, storyboard videos and manage engagement strategies.
• Effective change management skills and ability to lead a nimble and change ready organization.
• Knowledge of digital news and information publishing operations.
• Minimum 10+ years’ experience as a journalist, editor, and manager in a news role. You should show a record of success in identifying, developing and publishing terrific stories.
• Bachelor’s degree.
