The opportunity
This is a rare opportunity for a talented, enthusiastic and highly organised individual to join the Bloomsbury Children’s fiction editorial team. The role involves managing a variety of children’s titles through the editorial process – both autonomously and in support of the senior commissioning team – from manuscript delivery and cover briefing through to publication. It requires working collaboratively with authors and in-house colleagues in Design, Marketing, Publicity, Sales and Rights, as well as in our own editorial team.
This role reports to one of our two Fiction Editorial Directors. Please note this is not an entry-level role.
The role
Project-managing around 12 titles per year, seeing them through from manuscript delivery to printer-ready files
Undertaking structural and/or line-editing on some titles
Co-ordinating with Production and Design to keep titles on schedule
Liaising with Sales, Rights, Marketing and Publicity to provide copy and sales material on time, support campaign plans and champion your books
Maintaining day-to-day relationships with some key authors and their agents, being their go-to in-house contact and communicating information on all stages of progress on their books
Writing, reviewing and proofreading excellent copy for covers, AIs and catalogues
Taking responsibility for metadata and coding on your own titles, and some others as requested, on Biblio, ensuring it is current, complete and commercially appropriate
Reading and reporting on submissions, taking an active role in editorial meetings, creative brainstorms and discussions of potential acquisitions
Knowledge, Skills And Experience
We are seeking:
Demonstrated editorial experience in children’s publishing, ideally as part of a fiction list
Passion and enthusiasm for helping to create the books that kids love to read, as well as a good up-to-date knowledge of the children’s fiction market (5+ – YA)
Excellent author care and communication skills
Meticulous attention to detail
Excellent proofreading and copy-editing skills
The ability to write strong sales copy and blurbs
The ability to prioritise and use own initiative, juggling several projects at one time
Solid time-management skills to cope with competing deadlines
A team player, able to galvanise cross-departmental support for books and authors, and to take a proactive role within the fiction editorial team, being a supportive colleague and champion of the fiction list as a whole
Additional Information
The role is a full-time and permanent
The role is based at our London office 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP on a hybrid working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred). Allocated office days for this role are: Monday and Tuesday.
