The Boston Globe is looking for a dynamic reporter to join its weather expansion effort, adding to a team of journalists as we launch a dedicated new vertical. The ideal candidate will have a background in both news and weather or climate reporting, with a love for extreme weather events and deadlines.
This person should have a metabolism for speed, but also the desire to dig into the changing patterns that affect our daily forecast patterns, as the Globe’s brand of weather journalism will aim to go beyond the headlines and ask what makes these events happen and why they matter.
Because this is a new initiative, a self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit is key, as this reporter will have an opportunity to help shape our coverage and put their personal stamp on it.
In the role, this reporter will pitch and write stories big and small, with an eye towards urgent updates and thoughtful enterprise alike. They will also participate in extreme weather coverage, contribute to live blogs, and help build out this exciting new vertical in all forms.
Responsibilities
Conceive of and write weather-related stories with speed, accuracy and clarity.
Author journalism that offers readers both the analysis and careful explanatory take that is a hallmark of Globe reporting.
Work with the staff meteorologist and the weather editor to brainstorm unique coverage formats that harness our forecasting chops and help our audience make sense of it all.
Contribute to extreme weather events in a multitude of ways, from live blog coverage, to breaking updates.
Coordinate with data, climate, breaking news and audience engagement teams to maximize impact and readership of all weather coverage.
Qualifications
Three years or more spent as a reporter. Experience covering breaking news and weather preferred but not required.
A sharp eye for weather coverage and stories, and a creative approach to finding new and interesting ways to tell them.
Experience with meeting deadlines in fast-moving news events.
A love of starting new things and helping shape journalistic coverage.
A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
