Business Insider is hiring a paid U.S.-based editorial fellow to join our Business Contributors and Freelance team in January 2024.
Our mission is to inspire action through thought-provoking stories. We help our readers discover the ideas and the people who are changing business, tech, and beyond. Our team members embody and uphold Business Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.
The Role & Team:
The Contributors and Freelance team works across the entire business division to bring new voices and writers — contributors, thought leaders, experts, personal essayists, authors, and more — onto the site to help humanize BI's business coverage. We publish first-person stories (personal essays, as-told-to stories, op-eds, experientials) that highlight relatable experiences and emotions while showcasing broader business themes. We work with a large roster of freelance journalists to experiment in new subject areas and deepen the work of our internal desks: tech, finance, retail, transportation, media, healthcare, advertising, and more.
The Business Contributors Fellow will help us to expand our contributor coverage by finding writers and sources, brainstorming, coordinating, interviewing, writing, or editing a steady pipeline of smart and engaging personal essays, as-told-to-style stories, and book excerpts aimed at our business audience.
The fellow should have a knack for spotting and telling compelling human-interest stories related to tech, money, travel, relocation, retail, and business news. You should be comfortable interviewing and communicating with people, and have an endless curiosity about people’s lives, careers, and stories. The role is an excellent opportunity to edit stories from outside contributors and to interview and then write as-told-to stories about sources. Previous professional writing and storytelling experience is a huge asset.
The role is based out of our New York City office.
Note: Business Insider is a flexible workplace when it comes to remote work, but an important part of the fellowship is being a part of the newsroom in person for learning opportunities. Fellows are asked to come into our offices at least two days a week.
Key Responsibilities:
Sourcing, interviewing, and reporting as-told-to stories
Pitching new story and source ideas daily
Editing stories written by contributors
Contributing to daily and weekly brainstorms
Building stories in a CMS
Collaborating on cross-team projects
The ideal candidate has:
An interest in human-interest stories related to tech, money, travel, relocation, retail, and business news — should be a voracious consumer of social media, podcasts, and newsletters.
Experience reporting and writing (school publications are great)
A deep curiosity about people’s lives and voracious reading habits
An ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
Proofreading, copyediting, and fact checking skills
An ability to problem solve independently and a willingness to learn and incorporate feedback
A good sense for what Business Insider readers will find interesting
The initiative and drive to pitch writers, story ideas, and books
Experience writing headlines and social copy
Experience working and inputting stories into a CMS
A good eye for photo/visual information
An ability to file multiple stories per week
Strong time-management skills
Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:
A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
Familiarity with digital and social media
The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
Proofreading and copyediting skills
A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun
