Business Insider is hiring a paid U.S.-based editorial fellow to join the Transportation desk in January 2024.

Our mission is to inform and inspire the digital generation and become the most influential and loved journalism company. At BI, we aim to cover the people, companies, and ideas changing our world. Our team members embody and uphold BI's three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.

The Role & Team:

Business Insider’s transportation team covers everything from the latest electric car models to the dealerships that sell them, factories that build them, and more. The Transportation Reporting Fellow will cover electric cars and the automotive industry and will have the opportunity to interview C-suite executives, cover breaking news on major industry players like Tesla, and analyze trends affecting companies and consumers. They will be able to work on stories like:

The daily routine of a Ford executive who's up at 5:30 a.m., listens to a 'hype song' on the way to work, and ends the day with wine, TV, and a 'golden hour'
Lamborghini's CEO explains why the company isn't planning an all-electric supercar
Auto execs still aren't convinced about electric cars
A Tesla driver details how he survived a 14-hour traffic jam in snowy weather with 50 miles of battery range to spare
Tesla owners share some of the unexpected headaches of owning the EV
The 23 longest-lasting cars, trucks, and SUVs that are most likely to hit 250,000 miles
Tesla's biggest Chinese rival unveiled a ridiculously cheap electric car — see the $11,000 BYD Seagull

The Transportation Reporting Fellow will report to Senior Editor Graham Rapier, and the role is based out of our New York City office.

Note: Business Insider is a flexible workplace when it comes to remote work, but an important part of the fellowship is being a part of the newsroom in person for learning opportunities. Fellows are asked to come into our offices at least two days a week.

Writing daily stories about the automotive industry and electric vehicles.
Pitching reported stories that speak to the ongoing electric transition within the industry.
Keeping tabs on new and exciting vehicles for coverage on Insider.
Sourcing from analysts and customers for story ideas and quotes.
Contributing to team brainstorm sessions and working with other reporters on stories.

The ideal candidate has:

Demonstrable knowledge and experience covering industries and reporting on business overall, with a passion to carve out a compelling beat within the fast-changing world of transportation.
Interest in exploring who the leaders are in transportation and the possible challengers
Can take initiative and identify must-read story ideas
Enthusiasm for breaking down complex topics for our audience

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:

A passion for digital storytelling, voracious reading habits, and familiarity with digital and social media
Experience reporting and writing (school publications are great!)
Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
Solid proofreading/copy editing skills and light HTML/Photoshop experience

Salary & Benefits:

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.

Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
PTO and paid holidays
Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
