Capital B is a startup local and national nonprofit news organization reporting for Black communities across the country. We are looking for a creative and enterprising editor who is well-versed in Atlanta news and culture to lead a team of reporters covering issues that impact the city’s Black communities.

This role is for a seasoned journalist who is passionate about Atlanta and energized about building a young newsroom into a go-to information source. The ideal candidate will have experience covering the city and a deep understanding of what Black residents want and need to know. We’re looking for a leader with a wealth of ideas and sources, who is generous with their knowledge and connections in the city.

The Atlanta editor should have solid local news judgment and be adept at leading reporters with a range of talents and experience levels, leading with professionalism and empathy. They also should be collaborative, open to sharing ideas and working with our audience teams and other local and national newsrooms.

We’re a news organization driven by civic and service journalism, with an eye for accountability and impact. The Atlanta editor will have the tremendous opportunity to combine their news judgment and knowledge of the region with the results of Capital B’s community listening efforts to shape coverage for a new kind of journalism outlet.

This position reports to Capital B’s managing editor of local.

Salary: $90,000 - $115,000

Location: Atlanta

Responsibilities:

Manage a start-up local newsroom — from hiring and training reporters to planning and executing coverage
Work with community engagement editor to develop editorial strategy based on community information needs, current events, and Atlanta’s unique characteristics
Assign and edit stories
Develop and maintain editorial calendar
Communicate editorial strategy and editorial calendar to central editorial and business teams — with regular updates on priorities, challenges, and wins
Work with central editorial and business teams on reporting collaborations, special projects, events, and other relevant development projects
Work with editorial director and audience team to conceive of and secure editorial partnerships

3+ years editing experience
Some management/leadership experience
Story editing and assigning magic
Big ideas — the ability to occasionally look beyond the daily grind to think about what’s next
An extreme audience focus — Capital B’s work is not for industry peers or award committees, although it’s a plus if they like it!
Familiarity with the big issues facing Atlanta, and their impact on Black residents
Sensitivity to the responsibilities of reporting for underrepresented communities
