Energy and Environment Reporter

New Posted 18 July 2023 | Casper, Wyoming | Casper Star-Tribune

The Casper Star-Tribune, Wyoming’s statewide newspaper and top daily, is seeking a talented reporter with strong investigative, storytelling and breaking news skills to join our team.

Our energy and environment reporter covers changes in the industries — oil, natural gas and coal — that have driven Wyoming’s economy for decades, as well as the emerging renewable sector that will play a vital role in the state’s future. You will also write about natural resources that extend beyond industry. That includes the animals most associated with Wyoming — grizzly bears, bison, sage grouse and wolves — as well as the vast open spaces the state is known for.

Now is an especially dynamic time to be writing about these topics. Wyoming sits at the center of America’s changing energy industry and will soon become home to one of the nation’s first next-generation nuclear reactors. Meanwhile, the state is ground zero for the debate about how to best protect wildlife.

Energy affects virtually all aspects of life here, from school enrollment and employment to local politics and land development. The job requires a journalist who understands industry and business but also worker safety and labor issues. Documenting the changing regulatory environment and its impact on Wyoming’s economy and natural resources is also critical.

We’re looking for someone willing to dig deep for the story, whether that means poring over production figures, visiting critical habitat or interviewing miners in a rural bar. The ideal candidate will have the reporting skills to synthesize vast amounts of data and the writing chops to craft long-form stories that resonate with readers.

We take pride in being our state’s top newspaper. We’ve been named the best daily in Wyoming for five of the last six years, and we routinely break the state’s biggest stories. Our reporters regularly take home awards at state, regional and national competitions, and we have a reputation for developing journalists, many of whom have gone on to major publications.

Outside the newsroom, Wyoming offers endless outdoor opportunities. We’re at the base of a beautiful mountain range where you can hike in the summer and ski in the winter. Camping and world-class fishing are just a short drive out of town. Casper boasts the big-city offerings of restaurants, shopping, microbreweries and the arts while still giving you plenty of room to breathe. And if you’re missing a big city, Denver is down the interstate.

The Casper Star-Tribune is a Lee Enterprises news organization. We offer a strong benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, paid holidays and vacation. We are an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity in our newsroom and encourage candidates from underrepresented communities to apply.
