Summer 2023 Data Reporting Internship

Are you a motivated undergraduate or graduate student interested in telling stories about education in America? Come intern with us at Chalkbeat, where you’ll spend 10 paid weeks covering the effort to improve U.S. schools for all children, especially for students who have historically lacked access to a quality education. As a data intern, you'll work as a full contributor to our data team, working side by side with reporters, editors, and other data journalists on tasks like:
Analyzing education data sets like enrollment, COVID vaccination, school budgets, and more.
Building graphics to accompany Chalkbeat stories, either in Datawrapper or our D3-based templates based on the NPR Dailygraphics Rig.
Learn to think about data in an empathetic, community-first team environment.
Work on at least one large-format enterprise story.
Write scrapers and processing scripts to extract data and make it more accessible for our newsroom.
Attend virtual weekly skills-building sessions with the reporting, engagement, and marketing interns.
Become an integral part of a dynamic, diverse newsroom.
