The Chicago Tribune is seeking an education reporter whose primary focus will be on Chicago Public Schools. Prospective applicants should be able to both break news with urgency and to generate insightful enterprise content, balancing the demands of daily news coverage with that of longer-term projects that break ground and set the Chicago Tribune apart. Successful candidates will have the ability to approach coverage through an equity lens and to use multiple tools to generate content, including FOIA, sourcing and data-driven reporting. The ideal candidate will know how to grasp the workings of a large, complex government agency, but also be able to distill that into reader-friendly, accessible copy for a wide audience. They should find and tell stories that speak to broad trends across a large, diverse school system, as well as stories with a human face that show how those trends affect children and families. Prior daily news reporting experience is required, preferably covering education or other large urban public agencies for 3+ years. Tribune Publishing is committed to hiring people with diverse backgrounds, voices and visions. Be yourself. Bring yourself. Because that’s the only way we will deliver on our mission to provide meaningful journalism to the diverse communities we serve.
