The Chicago Tribune is looking for an aggressive reporter to join its City Hall team at the largest news organization in the Midwest. This reporter will be responsible for day-to-day news coverage on one of the most exciting and competitive political beats in the nation, joining a team that aims to break news and provide keen insights on both the fledgling mayoral administration and a City Council that has a long history of corruption.
What you will do:
Provide real-time coverage of the mayor, his administration, and its municipal policies
Provide real-time coverage of the city's 50 council members how and their policies affect the neighborhoods they represent
Write smart and clean stories quickly on breaking news for the online audience, being able to provide thoughtful, contextualized coverage for later that day/week
Dig beyond press releases and tweets to break news and set the Tribune's coverage apart from the competition
Regular shifts will vary depending on news needs but candidates should expect some night and weekend work
What you will bring:
The ability to juggle multiple stories a day while also being on the lookout for broader political and governmental trends
Knowing how City Hall works and about the players involved is a plus
The ability to work well with colleagues from across the newsroom and especially with others on the political team as our work often overlaps with everything from state government, the suburbs, or sports
We are looking for a journalist who is collaborative, creative, collegial, high energy and dogged in pursuit of the story
