About City Bureau
City Bureau is a journalism lab reimagining local media as a direct service to democracy. We equip people with skills and resources, facilitate critical public conversations, and produce information that directly addresses people’s needs. We also make an impact nationally by supporting and convening organizations in other parts of the United States and across the world to further participatory media as a field. Our work is rooted in a belief that an equitable information system is the foundation for a just democracy, and our long term vision is a world in which every community is equipped with the tools it needs to eliminate information inequity and further liberation, justice, and self-determination.
Job Description
City Bureau is seeking a sharp writer and strategic communicator to join our development team as our Lead Development Writer. In this role, you will work closely with our Development Manager and Communications Director to craft City Bureau’s voice and tell our story, drafting and overseeing tailored fundraising communications of all kinds. The day-to-day responsibilities will include drafting grant proposals, crafting campaign language, writing outlines of remarks for speaking engagements, and coordinating with staff across City Bureau to present their work in the most compelling way possible.
For this manager-level position, we’re seeking an experienced writer with a demonstrated commitment to City Bureau’s mission. In the same way that City Bureau is dedicated to reimagining journalism, our development team is dedicated to thinking creatively about bringing an equitable framework to a historically inequitable field. Special consideration will be given to applicants who have experience in the field of participatory media and/or have worked closely with Chicago’s South and West Side communities.
