Stevens invites applications for the position of Communications Specialist to advance its reputation and impact through all communications channels. The successful candidate will supports content needs for institutional objectives through web stories, print publications, multimedia content, leadership communications, scripts, event communications, email content, news releases and more. The position works with internal staff and partners and external sources to research, write, edit, and proofread materials for key constituencies.
Reporting to the Associate Director for Strategic Communications, the Communications Specialist will support content development for a variety of formats and channels in support of broad institutional needs, including campus communications, presidential communications, emergency communications, as well as web, news, PR, and other initiatives. The Communications Specialist will prepare high-quality content for print, digital, and multimedia platforms that highlights university progress, achievements, and student success. The ideal candidate will be a versatile writer, able to create and disseminate content that engages multiple stakeholders, including the campus community, prospective students and parents, alumni, peers, elected officials, the general public, and journalists in order to build affinity for the Stevens brand and advance institutional objectives.
The Communications Specialist Will
Actively mine for content within the university community;
Develop and pitch creative story and content ideas;
Turn ideas into executed deliverables through powerful storytelling, delivering on brand messages in a variety of content formats;
Create original copy and repurpose/refine existing content for multiple applications on various platforms/channels while maintaining consistent messaging and voice;
Learn and assimilate university editorial style within all projects;
Keep up to date with university facts and maintain regular updates of institutional fact sheets, PowerPoint decks, style guides, university boilerplates and other brand assets;
Support executive communications;
Assist with emergency communications;
Collaborate with colleagues in public relations, multimedia, marketing and brand/strategic initiatives on institutional content;
Review, edit, proofread and contribute to internal partners’ high-level strategic content projects;
Contribute to the alumni magazine;
Cover events, occasionally at night or on weekends;
Track content effectiveness and recommend strategies to improve and shape content initiatives.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or similar relevant area
Two (2) years of professional experience in writing/content development
Ability to creatively and effectively write, rewrite, edit, proofread and manage all aspects of assigned submissions
Ability to write effectively for many channels, including emails, speeches, web content, articles, brochures, talking points, presentations and more
Capacity to effectively manage evolving priorities, multiple projects and deadlines
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications
Excellent proofreading and editing skills
Experience with web content management systems
Knowledge of AP Stylebook or ability to quickly learn and apply AP style and university style to work products
Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work
Deadline orientation
Experience producing journalistic multimedia content a plus
Writing samples demonstrating ability to produce engaging and informative content in a variety of styles and media will be required for all finalists.
