Criminal Justice Reporter

New Posted 22 December 2022 | Honolulu, Hawaii | Honolulu Civil Beat

Honolulu Civil Beat, a nonprofit public affairs and investigative news site, is looking for a reporter with a strong track record for turning out high-end enterprise and watchdog stories to cover criminal justice and public safety issues in Hawaii. This is one of our premier beats. Civil Beat has won multiple awards for its in-depth coverage of police accountability and corruption, prisons, courts and other legal affairs. Though there will be some breaking news to report, the beat is focused on enterprise rather than daily cops and courts reporting. We're particularly interested in exploring police practices and policies with an eye toward solutions, as well as human interest stories that illuminate public safety from the perspective of citizens, victims and the cop on the beat. We're looking for a reporter with a minimum of 5 years experience who can combine strong digging and data skills, source building and compelling storytelling. Knowledge of Hawaii, the most diverse state in the U.S., a digital mindset and multimedia skills are definite pluses.  We're a very collaborative newsroom, too. Civil Beat pays competitive salaries, and has an excellent benefits package, including a 401(k) match, six weeks PTO a year and company-funded training opportunities. The salary for this position depends on experience and qualifications, but is anticipated to be a minimum of $70,000. Civil Beat seeks to build a newsroom that reflects the diversity and lived experience of people in Hawaii. We encourage people from all communities, especially communities underrepresented in journalism, to apply. If you'd like to join Civil Beat in helping making a difference in Hawaii, email a resume, 3-5 clips and a cover letter to editors@civilbeat.org. Please apply ASAP - applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
