Current is an independent news service committed to covering public media in the U.S. with an inclusive lens. We value diversity in our team and believe in the power of different perspectives to enhance our reporting. We’re seeking a reporter with a keen eye for trends and innovations in funding, content and technology at local stations and national organizations like PBS and NPR.
Our readers want to know how the media landscape is changing and how their stations and networks can stand out and thrive. Your job would be to identify and analyze significant trends in audience service, fundraising and content distribution while keeping readers abreast of changes in policies and practices that affect their professions.
Responsibilities include reporting breaking news and developing in-depth enterprise stories, sometimes in collaboration with other reporters and editors, and contributing coverage that will be published on our website, twice-weekly newsletter, quarterly print publication and occasional webinars.
The ideal candidate:
Shows creativity — looks for fresh angles on trends and writes with flair and incisiveness
Is enterprising — can identify unique stories that no other publication will provide for our discerning readers
Exhibits versatility — is able to juggle breaking news and long-term enterprise assignments
Is familiar with public media content and curious about how noncommercial media can adapt to changing audience behavior and nonprofit business models.
Has at least three years’ experience in journalism
Can travel occasionally to cover conferences and report from the field
