The Daily American Republic in Poplar Bluff, Mo., has an opening for a sports writer for our five-day, Tuesday through Saturday, daily.
We primarily focus on three main high schools and Three Rivers College, a junior college with a rich men’s and women’s basketball tradition. Our full coverage region includes 15 high schools, offering a wealth of good games in all seasons and unique feature stories.
We are looking for someone who will engage our readers with feature stories and columns, and game coverage that doesn’t rely on play-by-play. Our sports writers also take their own photographs, help with pagination, and help uncover hidden talent to use as stringers.
We are a morning newspaper, so the ability to work accurately and quickly within a short window on deadline is of the utmost importance.
Our paper also works closely with two sister papers, both weeklies, The Dexter Statesman and The Prospect-News in Doniphan. Both papers are in neighboring counties.
The DAR is part of the Cape Girardeau-based Rust Communications.
Base salary for this position is $36,000.
PERKS: We offer the standard full-time benefits, including medical, vision and dental insurance, 401K and free life insurance, but we also offer flexible work schedules and an opportunity to become part of a growing community. We’re at the heart of a downtown rejuvenation project, in a community that set a foundation for this by strengthening its retail and industrial bases first.
We’re located within an easy two-hour or less drive of major cities, including St. Louis and Memphis, and our region offers many activities for outdoor enthusiasts.
AWARD-WINNING, GROWING:
Our newsroom includes seven full-time employees, along with a staff of freelancers.
We claimed multiple awards in the 2023 Better Newspaper Contest held by the Missouri Press Association.
We want to prioritize being a strong partner for our community and hold an annual campaign each year to recognize Difference Makers in our community, highlighting the positive change these volunteers have created. This project has also previously won awards in the Better Newspaper Contest. We also hold an annual blood drive, sponsor the community July 4th parade, and have other projects to help benefit our region.
We continue to seek new opportunities for our staff to learn and grow. We have been successful in securing multiple Potter Digital Ambassador partnerships with the Missouri School of Journalism and a Google technology grant, both aimed at expanding our digital presence.
