Senior Reporter

The Dallas Business Journal is looking for a senior reporter to cover real estate in one of the hottest markets in the country.

This position requires building and maintaining strong source networks to uncover deals before anyone else and the comprehensive impact of new projects. You will help our subscribers understand the developments that impact Dallas County the most and introduce them to its major investors and developers — and how their new projects shape our cities.

Commercial and residential development continues to swell as companies and people flood the region from the coasts and Midwest.

Reporting to our Assistant Managing Editor, you’ll break news daily as part of our dedicated real estate team that covers Dallas-Fort Worth economic development. You also will have time to commit to longform and investigative journalism. Our readers want the story behind someone’s success, what they’ve learned and what lies ahead.

You must be a vigilant networker and relationship manager to deliver source-driven scoops. Our best stories come from people, not press releases. You will break news that sources don't always want to be brought to light. As such, you must be able to determine whether a news item merits a brief, a story, an in-depth investigation — or no coverage at all.

Drive exclusive daily economic development coverage for Dallas County
Report with authority and flair on short and longform stories across all platforms
Routinely mine data and public records, as well as file open-record requests, to drive daily scoops and enterprise reporting
Deliver scoops on every commercial and residential real estate story of significance
Relentlessly develop sources and manage relationships with high-level executives and other community leaders
Ignore incremental transactional news that has little value or can be found elsewhere
Proven excellence in reporting and writing, including analytical and investigative work
Four or more years as a business reporter or editor, preferably in Texas
Knowledge of commercial and/or residential real estate
Capability to leverage relationships with sources to deliver content that differentiates the Business Journal from competitors that don't always understand how developers and the capital stack operate in Dallas
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
A clear drive to develop sources and build an audience
Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure
Data reporting skills
Ability to relate comfortably to a wide range of people, in person, on the phone and online
