Job Role:

We have an exciting opportunity for a sports writer to join our team at DC Thomson, working to provide innovative online, social media, print and event content for The Courier.

With the Fife beat of Scottish football as your primary focus, you will be responsible for producing breaking sports news reports, features, analysis, data interpretation and comment, alongside pictures, video and audio material, all specifically tailored to our audience’s requirements.

You will join an established team of sports journalists already covering the top football clubs in Dundee, Perth, Fife and Angus at an exciting time in DC Thomson’s history and will be empowered to experiment with new forms of content, designed to build our audience and drive/retain digital subscriptions for our titles.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide live coverage of breaking Fife sport stories for our online, social media and print platforms
Produce content from press conferences and live events
Develop strong network of contacts within the football and wider local sporting environment
Provide unique feature, data-driven analysis and trusted comment content
Contribute ideas for and participate in the production of innovative audio and video content
Package content attractively for online consumption and ensure search engine optimisation (SEO) standards are met
Proactively use social media to build and maintain an engaged audience of football fans
Work closely with colleagues across the business to maximise the impact of all content

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills/Personal Qualities and Experience:

Experience of journalism or content production, preferably in a sporting context, ideally in a busy regional or national newsroom
Innate understanding of the role of a sports journalist and the ability to manage relationships with colleagues, contacts and supporters
Ability to work well under pressure whilst maintaining accuracy
Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong knowledge of the Scottish sporting landscape with a particular emphasis on football
Strong knowledge of social media and ability to think creatively about story presentation and marketing
Knowledge of IPSO Editors’ Code of Practice
Full UK driving licence
Relevant degree or other qualification preferred but not essential
