Senior Writer

New Posted 5 February 2024 | Washington, DC | Edelman

Are you a seasoned storyteller with a passion for health writing, coupled with experience in executive communications? Edelman has been pioneering a transformative approach to brand storytelling, and we are seeking an exceptional professional to join our Editorial team in our continued evolution. In this role, you will be instrumental in primarily crafting compelling narratives that resonate with major healthcare clients’ target audiences, which range from the general public to healthcare industry stakeholders. You understand media as an audience, too, and know how to flex beyond healthcare issues and quickly grasp other topics and types of clients. Trends and timeliness of content matter a lot to you, and you understand social media’s role in identifying the former and shaping and distributing the latter.

A journalism background and agency experience are a plus, as is an ability to cut through dense research and industry jargon to create compelling, digestible content—in long- and short-form styles that range from features to social copy.

You’re as strategic of a thinker as you are a writer and understand how to ideate and shape content across different platforms. You’re not afraid of creativity or collaboration and even embrace it in ways that can turn what might otherwise be mundane content into something exciting. Whatever you’re communicating, you’ll join a team of collaborative, creative minds dedicated to creating best-in-class content and shaping the future of Edelman’s role in the evolving communications and media landscape.

Role Overview:

As a Corporate Affairs Writer, you will work closely with a team of seasoned professionals, leveraging your expertise in health writing and executive communications. Your responsibilities will include identifying, developing, and disseminating engaging content across various platforms to effectively communicate our clients' storytelling within the health domain.

Key Responsibilities:

Masterful Storytelling: Craft compelling narratives, with timely relevance, that inspire and engage our client's target audiences, including through earned media placements, thought leadership pieces, feature stories, Op-Eds, social media posts, and more.
Targeted research: Conduct the necessary research to find story ideas, and to add context to your content, including through client and partner materials, industry news, social media, interviews, and more. Support in-depth interviews of executives and others, including by drafting thoughtful interview questions and helping guide productive conversations that draw out the most relevant anecdotes and other information.
Media Landscape Expertise: Stay on the cutting edge of evolving media trends and coverage, guiding our clients on when and how to share their stories or points of view effectively.
Audience-Centric Approach: Treat the media as both an audience and a channel, tailoring content to resonate with specific demographics and interests.
Proactive Initiative: Demonstrate initiative in client work, taking charge of projects and providing innovative solutions.
Collaborative Teamwork: Collaborate closely with our earned media specialists to develop comprehensive media strategies that support compelling pitches to the press—for story ideas, executives’ points of view, client research, and more.
Monitoring: Continuously monitor media trends and social conversations to inform clients and inspire fresh story/communications ideas for you and them.
Analytics Integration: Integrate audience insights and analytics into your storytelling strategy to maximize impact.
Educational Leadership: Assist in organizing and conducting “story mining” sessions (i.e. in-depth interviews with clients and other subject matter experts) to glean meaningful information. Also help shape and conduct writing workshops, and provide ongoing guidance to junior staff members to enhance their storytelling, writing, and interviewing skills.

Basic Qualifications:

A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience—at least some of it tied to health writing—at a public relations agency, in journalism, or in a related field.
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, preferably journalism or a related discipline.
Journalism experience and expertise in health, medical, or scientific writing is highly desirable.
Proven experience in writing on behalf of executives, translating their ideas and messages into impactful, relatable, timely communications.
