The Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, is seeking an Editor to help further CGEP’s ambitious research efforts. The Editor will help drive CGEP’s research mission: to provide rigorous, relevant and timely research and analysis to a broad audience interested in issues related to energy and environmental policy, geopolitics, technology, markets and the energy sector.

The Editor will work with scholars, faculty, and other authors to create research reports and other written outputs that conform to CGEP’s mission and standards; perform edits of those written outputs; project manage said outputs by setting deadlines and keeping projects on track. The position will report to the Senior Managing Editor.

Responsibilities

Review CGEP’s written products, including research proposals, outlines, and drafts. Work with authors to interpret and address review comments successfully.
Keep assigned research projects on track and meet deadlines; keep all critical stakeholders up to date on the status of projects.
Ensure assigned research meets the standards set up in the CGEP review process.
Edit work to make it accessible to CGEP’s key stakeholders and to meet its editorial standards, and perform broader structural edits as needed.
Write or edit executive summaries and support materials for research as needed.
Work with copy editors and graphics designers as needed during the production process.

Project Management

Manage project timelines, deadlines and deliverables for all CGEP products
Maintain shared dashboard and databases of all research products as they pass through the publication process. Extract key metrics and create reports as needed.
Manage and track the research contributions from research scholars
Help manage daily communications between external and internal research referees and authors, and production teams.
Keep all stakeholders updated on the status of work.
Send reminders to ensure deadlines are met.

Writing/Editing

Edit or rewrite sections of research papers into shorter products (op-eds, blog posts, commentaries, etc.) that are relevant to the news cycle.
Draft executive summaries of research targeting CGEP’s audience and ghostwrite shorter pieces on occasion.
Work with authors and senior editors at all stages of research paper production:
idea conception and development
drafting of an outline
developing a first complete draft
identifying experts and facilitating the external review process; assisting in reviewing work after revised drafts submitted.

Production

Serve as a backup to CGEP’s production editor in their role when required, including communications with copy editors and graphic designers during the final stages of research production, ensuring author changes are implemented and CGEP standards are met.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, 4-6 years of directly related experience in writing and editing.
Outstanding written communication skills and an ability to communicate complex and technical material to lay audiences.
Ability to work comfortably with authors from diverse backgrounds and assist them in delivering written products that meet CGEP standards and guidelines.
Ability to work and prioritize under a variety of deadlines
Perform a wide range of edits, including copy, content and developmental edits.
Serve as a ghostwriter or create new written products from previously published materials under tight deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in the energy sector or writing about energy and environmental issues, or with academic writing standards.
