The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a skilled Medical Editor to support our faculty and residents in their academic publication endeavors. This position will be focused on manuscript editing and medical writing. It may be filled at a senior or intermediate level, depending upon the skill level and experience of the chosen candidate. This position may offer the ability to work remotely.

Responsibilities*

Receive manuscripts from neurosurgery faculty and residents; prioritize and organize accordingly.
Track projects as they are received, in process and completed.
Format manuscripts for publication according to appropriate journal formatting/submission requirements in a timely and thorough manner; this includes a careful review of title page information and formatting tables and figures to journal specifications.
Edit manuscripts for grammar, punctuation, calculations, style and other corrections.
Return all manuscript components to the corresponding or 1st author for approval of changes and to note any issues requiring the authors' attention prior to submission.
Create or assist the online submission of the manuscript on behalf of the corresponding author(s) and provide confirmation of submission to the author.
If changes/revisions are requested by the journal, or if a rejected manuscript needs to be submitted to a different journal, support the author(s) in the revision and/or resubmission process (cross-check changes, format, and edit revised manuscript as needed); submit new version with "Response to Reviewer" letter.
Track the status of submitted articles to ensure their timely review by journals; alert authors to potential delays and correspond directly with the journal as needed to resolve issues.
Maintain open lines of communication with faculty and residents at all times, keeping them updated on the progress of their project(s); if delays occur, keep them informed as appropriate.

Required Qualifications*

Exceptional skills in Microsoft Word.
Proficiency using a citation manager such as Endnote for generating citations/bibliographies according to the journal specifications. Verify references in PubMed.
Experience with PowerPoint for image editing; sufficient experience with Excel to convert tables and graphs to word.
Attention to detail is imperative for cross-checking abstract to text, tables to text, figures to text, etc.
Ability to edit for clarity and logical progression of thought.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Excellent work ethic; prompt and dependable.
Ability to interact with authors and journal staff on a friendly yet professional level.
Highly organized, with the ability to prioritize projects to meet required deadlines, and work independently.

Senior

Bachelor's degree in English, Science, or relevant field.
5 - 8 years of professional experience.

Intermediate

2 - 5 years of professional experience.

Desired Qualifications*

At least 3-5 years of experience as a medical editor, including manuscript editing.
Certificate in Medical Writing and Editing from an accredited program.
Certification by the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences as an Editor in the Life Sciences (ELS)
Familiarity with statistical terms and tests.
Basic math skills to check calculations in text and tables.
Basic skill in the use of Photoshop or a similar image editor for making cosmetic improvements to line drawings and formatting and converting images to journal specifications.
