EdTrust seeks an Editor/Writer to join the organization’s national Communications team. The Editor/Writer will join a staff that is committed to fulfilling our mission of advancing policies and practices to dismantle the racial and economic barriers embedded in the American education system . Through our research and advocacy, Ed Trust improves equity in education from preschool through college, engages diverse communities dedicated to equity and justice, and increases political and public will to build an education system where all students will thrive.
The Editor/Writer helps execute EdTrust’s editorial direction to create compelling messaging that adheres to the organization’s mission and integrity. This position engages with all internal teams to hone the messaging in Ed Trust reports, briefs, and other public-facing media and collateral. Deadline and detail oriented, the Editor/Writer works to ensure the quality of public facing products that amplify and promote the organization’s policy positions and advocacy to advance education equity .
Available immediately, this role is based in our Washington, DC office and is eligible for telework for up to three days a week. The Editor/Writer reports to the Editorial Director.
About The Editor/Writer Role
The responsibilities and objectives for this role include, but are not limited to, the following:
Collaborate across teams to support EdTrust’s editorial direction with compelling, mission-aligned messaging that advances EdTrust’s work to advance policies and practices to improve education for students of color and those from low-income backgrounds
Support the editorial and production process for a broad range of projects, ensuring all are high quality, achieve outreach goals, and are released on deadline
Edit — includes substantive editing and copyediting — proofread, and fact-check an array of content to ensure that it is accurate, accessible, clearly written, and advances the organization's priorities and mission
Help write and shape written and online content such as research papers, reports, policy briefs, newsletters, blog posts, and reported pieces, ensuring that content is accurate and accessible to a wide variety of audiences
Write (and/or report for) a variety of original, timely and engaging pieces, posts, and other editorial content
Contribute to and collaborate within the Communications team and with assigned content teams to hone messaging in EdTrust reports, briefs, and other public-facing media and collateral
Interpret data-rich materials and work with designers and authors to create high-quality, informative, and user-friendly multimedia products (e.g., data visualizations, infographics, videos)
Help manage EdTrust’s in-house style guide and raise awareness of Ed Trust style guidelines
Monitor editorial trends and best practices, especially in the education equity and social justice arenas, and frequently apply new knowledge to position

Required Qualifications And Experience
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:
At least a bachelor’s degree
Some relevant experience in writing and editing, with a preference for journalism experience
Superb copyediting skills and knowledge of AP Style
Working knowledge of Adobe suite, including Acrobat and inCopy, as well as project management apps (e.g., Asana), and content management systems (e.g., WordPress)
Knowledge of prominent education issues, particularly education equity issues
Compensation
This position falls in Level B of our salary structure for our Washington, DC office. New hire offers typically fall between the minimum and mid-point of the range and are rarely offered at the top of this range: $56,160 - $70,200. Offers will be commensurate with skills, experience and internal equity. The full salary range for this level is $56,160 to $84,240.
