The General Editor Audience Engagement will be primarily responsible for the editing and curation of ESPN.com's content feeds, including the home page and interior content landing pages. On a daily basis, this person will assess content from a variety of sources (ESPN Editorial, wire services, partners, digital video and streaming) to determine how it fits into our daily news coverage and programming needs. The editor evaluates sport page copy and headlines, provides feedback on all art, headlines and video, and works to package this content in a manner that captivates the audience and drives users deep into the site. Must possess strong news judgment and the ability to quickly prioritize and package various types of content for a large national audience, as well as evaluate content performance and identify trending stories. This is a hybrid position (4 days in office) located in our LA office or Bristol, CT.
This full-time position requires work on nights, weekends and some holidays.
Responsibilities:
The General Editor will assess and package incoming content, coordinate with other editors as needed, and program feeds while monitoring news and live events.
Manage overall style and voice of feeds in a fast-paced environment.
Along with the daily programming roles, the General Editor will be involved in short- and long-term editorial planning, creating programming strategies specifically tailored to the content and audience consumption patterns.
General editors manage and track contributions from multiple outputs including editorial, video, utility pages, streams and scores.
The General Editor will collaborate and communicate with content partners on daily programming plans, taking into account priorities across departments.
Basic Qualifications:
Minimum of 3 years working in a high-level sports media environment.
Possess strong knowledge of one or more of NFL, NBA, MLB, Soccer, College Football and College Basketball, including fantasy and betting. This includes not just on-field expertise, but a knowledge of the cutting-edge trends around the sport.
Understand and follow closely the latest in fan engagement data and key performance metrics to optimize content creation and distribution to fans.
Strong understanding and appreciation of news, story play and excellent headline writing skills.
Work quickly and juggle multiple varied tasks during a typical work day.
Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong appreciation of popular culture and understanding of the tastes of ESPN’s audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in online media content preparation. Applicants must have the ability to work in a rapidly changing online environment and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Sports takes place on nights, weekends and holidays -- and those shifts will be regular and required.
Have a background or quickly become competent in content management systems.
Required Education:
High School diploma or equivalent
Preferred Education:
A B.S./B.A. degree in communication arts, journalism or new media or equivalent combination of education experience.
