Pitches

New Posted 29 June 2023 | Remote | Feminist Food Journal

Feminist Food Journal accepts written articles and audio pieces in a range of styles and formats: literary journalism, memoirs, interviews, investigative journalism, poetry, and fiction.

Our journal name is a good reminder of the three themes you’ll need to keep in mind when developing a topic for your pitch: we’re looking for stories that take a feminist perspective on the intersections of food and the topic of the issue that you’re pitching for, or approach the intersections of feminism and the topic of the issue through the lens of food. All commissioned stories for Feminist Food Journal should be thoughtfully researched, well-reported, and told from an original perspective. Ideally, we want stories that are human-centred, with a compelling narrative, engaging characters, and — particularly for historical pieces — clear implications for the present day.

We’re particularly interested in publishing work from writers with historically minoritized identities, including LGBTQ2+ writers and writers with disabilities. We’re committed to featuring global perspectives on each issue, so we’re also very interested in stories coming from parts of the world that are less represented in mainstream food and feminist media.

How long should these stories be?
For written pieces, anywhere from 1,500 words to 5,000 words, depending on your story and how much space you need to do it justice. Lately, we’ve been finding that a minimum of 2,000 words is often required to reach the necessary level of analysis for our intersection of topics.

For audio pieces, anywhere between 15 to 45 minutes.

How much do you pay?
Currently, we pay a flat rate of USD$130 per contribution.
