Fortune is seeking a Contributors Editor to commission, field pitches for, and edit first-person essays, analysis pieces, and book excerpts from contributing writers across the business landscape, with an eye for what will engage a national and global audience.
Topics may include money, finance, the economy, personal finance, careers, real estate, entrepreneurship, tech, crypto and fintech, corporate governance, impact and sustainability, leadership, and more.
The editor will coordinate with our Commentary Editor to ensure that pieces contributed to Fortune are high quality and are written about topics, and by thought leaders, that our core and target audiences care about.
In this role, you will field pitches, commission thought pieces, and work with authors on book excerpts, aiming to publish multiple pieces per week. You will also cultivate relationships with writers who will become regular Fortune contributors.
This role demands being a quick study, able to edit across business topics; a good communicator who can deftly and effectively communicate with prominent voices; a talented and sensitive editor who can turn raw copy—often contributed by people who are topical experts but not professional writers—into compelling, readable pieces; and a highly organized editor who can plan and execute on a content calendar of contributed pieces.
A prior record of newsroom responsibility and great news judgment is essential. Strong candidates will have at least 3-5 years of full-time experience in business news, preferably working with contributors.
Responsibilities and skills:
Take ownership of our contributors coverage self-sufficiently as well as be responsive to input and direction from higher-level editors; coordinate and collaborate with our Commentary editor.
Regularly edit and publish a mix of contributor pieces to keep content fresh and relevant every day.
Constantly monitor news and trends, and always be ready with an idea for business and thought leaders to reach out to for commissioning.
Exhibit excellent editorial judgment and ambition to drive significant traffic.
Edit quickly, cleanly, sensitively, and accurately.
Stay organized while juggling edits of pieces at various stages in the process at any time.
Requirements:
At least three years' experience editing stories and contributed pieces for a national, and international, audience, preferably in business news.
An eye for what will pop with readers while maintaining high standards.
A rolodex of contacts across the business and leadership landscape to tap for pieces.
Business news experience and knowledge, with demonstrated expertise in multiple subjects and an ability to get up to speed quickly on less familiar topics.
A track record of strong news judgment and excellent communication and organizational skills.
Familiarity with data tools like Parsely or Chartbeat, with SEO techniques, and with social platforms strongly preferred.
Some great candidates may not fit neatly into what we’ve described above or have key skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.
All applicants should submit a resume and a cover letter explaining briefly how this role is a fit for your background, skills, and career goals.
Location: This role can be based anywhere in the US, with a preference for New York, where our headquarters is based. If you’re based within commuting distance of one of our offices, there will be at least 3 days/week in the office.
