We are seeking freelance writers to create the ultimate insider guides for selected stadiums across the US and Canada. These guides will include content about traveling to a city, lodging, local transit, seating, the gameday experience (tailgating, food, etc.), and all other advice that people who are traveling for sports would need to plan the best possible experiences.
In order to be considered, you must live within 30 miles of the ballpark you are applying for, and have significant experience attending games at that venue. What is "significant experience"? At least 7-10 games per year over the past three years.
Currently available stadium opportunities:
Chase Field (Phoenix), Angel Stadium (Anaheim), Oakland Coliseum (Oakland), Coors Field (Denver), Comerica Field (Detroit), Busch Stadium (St. Louis), Great American Ballpark (Cincinnati), Globe Life Field (Dallas), T-Mobile Park (Seattle).
(You are welcome to apply for NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS, and NCAA top 30 FBS programs, but we may not contact you until the spring/summer).
TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION, PLEASE APPLY ON LINKEDIN AND SUBMIT A "WHY YOU" LETTER TO JOBS@THESTADIUMINSIDERS.COM. ONLY APPLICATIONS THAT INCLUDE THIS WILL BE CONSIDERED. See the end of this listing for specific notes about what we're looking for -- we want to know why YOU are the right person to introduce visitors to your stadium! 95% of applicants blow this off. 100% of them are not considered. No exceptions, regardless of your experience. We won't call ... promise!
ALSO NOTE: this is not a sports journalism position. We do not cover the event on the field (i.e. the game, the score, the stats, the players, betting/fantasy sports, etc.). This is a travel/lifestyle/experiential writing assignment that is focused in and around the ballpark.
The expected time to complete this assignment is anywhere from 40-60 hours over the course of 4-6 weeks, depending on the stadium. Compensation is based on the total word count, plus an hourly stipend for specific research and content gathering (photos, videos, info about transit, local bars/restaurants/hotels, etc.), which will also include the need to be in-stadium on several occasions. All expenses related to the creation of this content will be covered by the company, including game tickets, concession costs, gameday expenses, parking, etc. Total comp is typically $800-$1200 per venue, but varies based on the complexity of the city and stadium.
Qualifications:
--You must be an excellent writer! Past writing experience at any level (collegiate, post-collegiate, professional) would be great, but we are willing to consider candidates who can otherwise demonstrate journalistic or written proficiency. Please note: your resume and accompanying letter will be considered as part of the writing evaluation, and are required to be considered for this role (see below). This is your chance to sell us on YOU, and to show us that you can write!
--You do not need to be an expert in sports for this position because we do not cover what's happening on the field. But you do need to have significant experience in attending games and engaging in the surrounding environment (understanding seating, gameday options, etc.), as well as a thorough understanding of your city's travel (local airports, train stations, etc.), local transit (subway/bus/rideshare/etc.), and lodging options (not specific experience staying at hotels, but rather understanding what areas of the city fans should be staying in).
--Photography and video skills: contributors should be able to capture high-quality video and photo content using their cell phone camera. You must have a phone or camera with a wide-angle lens (Android S20 or later, iPhone 12 Pro or later, or other comparable phone/camera). We can train you on how to capture better images.
A "WHY YOU" letter is required for consideration: please submit that to jobs@thestadiuminsiders.com. HERE'S WHAT WE WANT TO KNOW:
--Tell us about the experience that created your love of going to the ballpark (whatever ballpark that was for you), or what makes you passionate about attending live sports. Please keep in mind: we are interested in the experience, not what happened on the field, although we understand that the two may be related. But "the Red Sox won and it was so exciting" or "Aaron Judge is my favorite player" really won't do it for us. Don't look up stats -- this is about the experience, not the game. Bring it to life. Be a writer!
--What market you reside in, what stadium you are applying to cover, and why you consider yourself an expert in that stadium. No, we aren't sending you to Boston, New York, Philly, Baltimore, and DC, just because you're willing to travel and because they're a car ride away. You will only be considered for your home market, and only if you reside within 30 miles of that ballpark. We are looking for LOCAL EXPERTS.
--Links to any writing samples and/or creative content that you believe is relevant in demonstrating your skills.
This is an amazing opportunity for a sports fan with superior creative writing/content skills to do something really fun. We're looking forward to hearing from you! Selected candidates will be contacted during the week of February 25th for Zoom interviews. We appreciate your patience as we consider all of the candidates that apply.
