We are looking for a reporter to join the breaking news team in Hong Kong. The breaking news desk, which spans the world with operations in London and New York, runs the FT’s successful daily live blogs. It also writes and edits the first take on big breaking stories.
The desk ensures that the first take on major news stories gets on to ft.com quickly, either as a standalone article or as a post on our daily live blog. The blog runs 24 hours a day during the week, and covers all the main political, economic and corporate developments, as well as movements in financial markets.
Sometimes when there is a big rolling story, such as a market crisis or during the invasion of Ukraine, we run a dedicated blog and the breaking news desk will marshal rapid updates from across the FT network.
We are looking for a collaborative reporter and editor who can work well with the rest of the breaking news team and with the FT’s correspondents around the world. In Hong Kong, the breaking news reporter is a solo operator, so they need to be a self-starter, with confident news judgement and the ability to seek out interesting topics from the diverse regions that fall within the Asian timezone.
The role would suit an all-rounder, as comfortable on corporate and market stories as on political and economic news, who gets excited by working on the big story whatever that may be. Experience of live blogging would be beneficial, but is not essential; the job can work for an experienced journalist or for someone at the start of their career.
Key requirements
Spot what stories are likely to be of interest to FT readers
Write short articles on a variety of topics and be prepared to build out to long pieces
Edit copy quickly and accurately
Comfortable with topics from financial market moves and M&A deals to geopolitics and elections
Help to run the daily live blog, including writing headlines and choosing images
Cover live events such as speeches or conferences
Start time of 7am HKT to take over from New York and cover breaking corporate, economic and political stories
Please submit your application by 8am BST, Tuesday 31st October 2023.
