This is an historic opportunity to be a part of the grassroots revolution that's beginning to take shape across the country. A revolution in which newspapers are returning to their proper place as the source for local news!
In that vein, we are starting a new, locally owned and operated weekly newspaper in historic Morgan County, Ind., and we need a strong reporter candidate who shares not only in the vision of our publication, but in the mission — to serve the local community with all local news, all the time. We are driven by an informed public, and by the role a local newspaper plays in the community — to strengthen the threads of the community fabric and to anchor its identity.
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who's naturally curious and able to juggle multiple beats and tasks. We want someone who is inspired by the essential tenets of journalism — to hold government accountable, to look out for the underdogs, and to be driven by the public good at every turn.
You will have ongoing guidance from an experienced editor who's facilitated award-winning journalism throughout his career. He is passionate about the role community newspapers play in the lives of the citizenry, and he's eager to make this endeavor successful.
This position, however, is not for the faint of heart. This is not a "safe" choice for recent graduates. It is a daring position that will require a leap of faith. But it will provide an opportunity to make history, to be a part of something that's beginning to surface in the cultural zeitgeist — that local content matters most, that print is not dead, and that local owners are a vital part of the equation.
Some experience is preferred, but we understand full well publications of this sort serve as "training grounds" for ambitious reporters. So we're happy to train the right candidate. Photography skills are also preferred, and social-media savvy is a plus.
This position is full time and in person. The occasional nights and weekends will also be required.
