The Granite State News Collaborative is an award-winning collective of more than 20 local media, education and community partners working together to produce and share news stories on the issues that most impact our state. The hope is that by working together we can provide more information to more communities across New Hampshire than we could individually.

Job Description:

The Granite State News Collaborative is seeking a skilled and motivated Freelance Investigative Journalist to join our team. As a Freelance Investigative Journalist, you will be responsible for researching, reporting, and producing compelling investigative, in-depth and solutions-focused stories that address important issues impacting the people of New Hampshire. This is an excellent opportunity for a journalist with a passion for uncovering the truth and a commitment to journalistic excellence. If you have not worked as a journalist but in a field where you’ve honed the relevant skills listed below, we welcome you to apply. If you are a newer journalist for whom investigative and data journalism is your jam, but you just haven’t gotten to do as much as you’d like, you too, should apply.
Preference will be given to applicants living in New Hampshire and the surrounding New England states.

Responsibilities:

Research and Investigation: Conduct in-depth research and investigation to uncover newsworthy stories related to education, police and criminal justice, social justice issues, environment, economy, and other relevant topics in New Hampshire.
Interviews and Source Development: Develop and maintain a network of sources to gather information, conduct interviews with key stakeholders, and obtain valuable insights for investigative reporting.
Data Analysis: Utilize data journalism techniques to analyze and interpret complex data sets, providing context and clarity to support investigative findings.
Writing and Reporting: Produce high-quality, engaging, and well-researched investigative reports in various formats, including articles, features, and multimedia content.
Collaboration: Work closely with other journalists, editors, and contributors within The Granite State News Collaborative to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive approach to reporting.
Adherence to Ethics and Standards: Uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity, ethics, and accuracy in all aspects of reporting.

Requirements:

Proven Experience: Demonstrated experience in investigative journalism with a portfolio of impactful stories.
Excellent Research Skills: Strong research skills with the ability to dig deep into complex topics and discover hidden information.
Interviewing Skills: Proficient in conducting interviews and developing relationships with sources.
Data Journalism: Experience in data analysis and visualization techniques is a plus.
Strong Writing Skills: Exceptional writing skills with the ability to convey complex information in a clear and engaging manner.
Digital Media Proficiency: Familiarity with multimedia storytelling, including the use of audio, video, and interactive elements is a plus.
Self-Motivated: Ability to work independently and take initiative in identifying and pursuing investigative opportunities.
