The Guardian US seeks a creative, energetic and data-driven news writer to join our US team and help us grow and diversify our audience. This person will work closely with the breaking news desk and audience development team. The ideal candidate will have a high metabolism and sharp eye for smart story ideas that can be executed quickly — and help grow our US audience. We are looking for a writer who reads widely, can identify compelling trending topics as early as possible, and is fearless about advancing them with accurate, original reporting.
The Guardian has experienced significant growth in the US and currently draws more than 50 million monthly unique visitors in America, and more than 170 million unique visitors around the world. The right fit for this role will have a passion for news and audience data, with sharp reporting and writing skills. They should have a keen understanding of internet culture and communities.
At the Guardian, we're experimenting with different content formats as part of our audience development strategy. While a big part of this role involves writing these quick-turnaround stories, we also want to use quieter moments for longer-term coverage plans, including FAQs and explainers pegged to upcoming news events. This writer will often work with our SEO team to build out these longer term pieces.
We're particularly interested in candidates with experience and ideas that will help us diversify our audiences culturally and geographically and increase our reach among underserved communities in the US, supporting our work to create journalism and build a readership that is representative of America. This will be a core focus for the candidate and others on the team.
