Sports Editor

New Posted 29 November 2022 | Charleston, West Virginia | HD Media

HD Media, the publisher of West Virginia's two largest dailies and more than a half-dozen weeklies, is seeking a sports editor who will help make our sports staff the best of its size in the country. We cover the state's two flagship universities, with a writer camped in Morgantown to follow WVU for the Charleston Gazette-Mail and another staffed at The Herald-Dispatch in Huntington, home to Marshall University. Prep sports is a major draw across all our platforms, adding to the demands of the position. This is not a job for the weak kneed. It's a job for someone with experience and drive, someone with a relentless motor who understands what it means to be a sports journalist, what it means to dig and report rather than spit out scores and stats. We need someone who can develop staff and position us to succeed. That, to us, doesn't mean just turning stories but getting the stories no one else has. When high-profile people get fired, we don't want to know only that it happened. We want to know why. We don't need someone to tell us the score. We need someone to show us what's going on behind closed doors, from the lockerrooms to the boardrooms. We want the stories no one else could get. We want to be the source for all the sports news that matters. We want someone who can deliver this every day, all the time. If this sounds like you, email a cover letter, resume and samples of your best work and your staff's to HD Media Vice President of News and Executive Editor Lee Wolverton at lwolverton@hdmediallc.com. Make the subject line: Sports Editor. Make your samples pdf's. Make your materials readily accessible. Make it easy for us to consider you. If you've always wanted to try sports, try somewhere else. We aren't looking for pretenders and wannabes. We're looking for a leader.
