Hearst Enthusiast Group (Runner’s World, Bicycling, Popular Mechanics, Biography.com and Best Products) is looking for a Deputy Features Editor to identify and execute feature stories that support the group’s print, Apple News+, loyalty, and membership goals and make an impact within and beyond our endemic communities.

The Deputy Features Editor will combine the craft of storytelling with sound journalism principles to pitch, assign, and edit—or occasionally write—stories that range from deeply reported narratives to fast-turn features to thoroughly informative packages across all platforms of the Enthusiast brands, with a primary focus on Popular Mechanics. The editor will mentor and top edit junior staff and help elevate the quality of storytelling throughout the group.

The ideal candidate is a prolific idea generator with experience developing features for editorial publications, the ability to think broadly and critically, a track record of publishing impactful long-form science journalism, and a proven ability to provide meaningful feedback and mentoring to writers and editors. This role will report to the Executive Features Director.
Responsibilities

What you’ll do

Use data signals to identify and execute features that meet success metrics across all Enthusiast Group brands
Pitch, develop, and edit features, and other content as needed, to the highest level of excellence for print, Apple News+, and websites across brands (primarily PopMech)
Manage a small team of editors creating content—from features to news stories—that engage our most loyal readers
Work with writers, photographers, designers, fact checkers, and other contributors to tell diverse stories (across multiple platforms as needed) while hitting budget and deadline targets
Top edit the work of other editors
Cultivate relationships within relevant communities to identify story ideas and new contributors
Collaborate with coworkers to brainstorm and develop new ideas and coverage opportunities
Build features in the print and digital CMS environments
Other duties as needed

Qualifications

What you’ll offer

Eight-plus years of relevant professional experience in consumer editorial (print and digital), with a robust portfolio of work including reported narratives, profiles, investigations, and service packages
Proven experience editing science, engineering, and technology content
A sophisticated understanding of the elements of effective magazine storytelling
Existing relationships with best-in-class feature writers in the areas of science/tech, sports, fitness, and general interest
A commitment to journalistic ethics and standards and experience with legally sensitive stories
An ability to articulate feedback to writers and other contributors with clarity and sensitivity
An ability and willingness to be flexible in a deadline-driven work environment, to adapt to strategy changes, and to take on new challenges when the need and opportunity arises
A strategic mindset and experience with hitting strategy goals, as well as an ability and willingness to use data to inform creative decisions
A flair for impactful display copy, and an obsession with story structure
An endless supply of ideas
An innate curiosity for how the world works
A bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, English, liberal arts, journalism, or a related field

The base salary for this role is $77,190 - $92,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.

This position is based in the Easton, PA office a minimum of 3 days a week. Note: no relocation assistance provided.
