The Senior Enterprise Reporter is a newsroom leader with at least five years of reporting experience who clearly demonstrates a commitment to Houston Public Media’s mission to inform the public on issues impacting the Houston region and Texas.
You can strategically cover the major stories through a deep understanding of the issues, guiding and planning coverage with editors, and providing timely and thoroughly reported stories. This means routinely producing daily and feature stories equally for radio, podcast, and digital audiences. You will cover news of the day, breaking news, and independently generate original story ideas through building reliable sources, fact gathering, and data-based reporting. An Enterprise Reporter is tenacious, organized, and flexible, possesses a “can-do” attitude, is motivated to delve into a story and committed to their craft. You are expected to produce and write in-depth stories on a regular basis which means you’re juggling multiple stories simultaneously through researching and interviewing sources, going where the story is to collect information and audio, adjusting your schedule to cover events and conduct interviews, requesting records, working with data, writing stories for audio and web, and editing the story using Adobe Audition. You are also communicating with editors throughout the reporting process. An Enterprise Reporter possesses strong writing skills for audio storytelling and web and has experience using data and public records in their reporting.
A Senior Reporter leans into the leadership role, offering analysis to editors and peers, regularly contributing ideas to daily news meetings, mentoring young reporters to deepen their skills, and filling in for the editor. You are a highly effective communicator who keeps editors informed, collaborates easily with peers, and problem-solves. A Senior Reporter is expected to model accountability, initiative, willingness to grow, and a commitment to excellence.
Spanish language familiarity a plus.

Job entails:
Holistic understanding and awareness of newsroom needs and initiates discussions with editors and activates to provide coverage.
Guiding newsroom on coverage of issues, topics and angles on stories while providing analysis in decision making.
Working with EP to develop daily and in-depth stories for radio and web.
Going into the field to conduct interviews, cover breaking news and events, gather information, records, audio, etc. Write features, newscast items and web copy. Do live shots.
Being able and willing to adjust schedule as needed.
Editing in Audition, using recording equipment.
Collaboration with station partners on story projects Leadership – High visibility, newsroom engagement, analysis, mentorship, filling in for editor.
