The Indianapolis Star/IndyStar.com has an immediate opening for a health reporter.
This beat will focus on trending health and wellness topics, such as flu and COVID, as well as politically sensitive issues such as abortion and transgender care. It will require sharp news judgment and the ability to quickly turn stories that will resonate with our readers and grow our audience. It will also provide the opportunity to write revelatory enterprise on some of the most divisive issues of our time.
The ideal candidate will be skilled at source development, database reporting and the use of public records. They should demonstrate a strong understanding of audience metrics, social media and search engine optimization.
We also look for journalists who have intellectual curiosity, a sense of justice/purpose, passion and compassion.
Other requirements:
• 1 year of experience in journalism. This can include internships and student newspaper work.
• Critical thinking skills.
• Knowledge of AP style.
• Planning, organizational and time management skills.
• Self-motivation and self-direction.
• Collaboration and communication skills.
• Ability to work weekends and nights.
