Deputy Editor

The Idaho Mountain Express, the state’s largest non-daily newspaper, is seeking an exceptional full-time Deputy Editor to work with the Editor-in-Chief and serve as one of the leaders of its dynamic newsroom.

We need an experienced, organized, multi-talented journalist with a strong nose for news who can serve in a variety of roles in telling the stories of Idaho’s iconic Sun Valley area. The candidate must have strong copyediting, line-editing, reporting, headline-writing and page-design skills. Should be a good communicator willing to help young reporters hone their skills and to support mid-career journalists.

The Deputy Editor will partner with the Editor-in-Chief to publish newspapers twice a week, as well as special sections, special projects and seasonal glossy magazines. The main aspects of the job include serving as the chief copy editor, responsible for maintaining the quality, style and consistency of all copy in the newspaper and other publications.

The position also requires organizing, editing and posting news stories and breaking news to the newspaper’s website and newsletter and managing its social-media presence. He or she is also responsible for writing news stories and project pieces, as time allows, and assisting the Editor-in-Chief in getting the newspaper to press and working with news staff to ensure beats are covered.

The Deputy Editor must be able to cover the editor-in-chief’s desk up to eight weeks per year—primarily for vacation coverage—as well as be able to assign, organize, edit and produce numerous special sections each year.

The schedule is based on a 40-hour work week with limited overtime incurred as allowed.
