About The Role

Your role as a Junior Sub-editor for Radio Times is to support the subbing team in all areas, from subbing features and choices pages to uploading daily TV highlights to the website and to the app. The role will also include working on reader offers, digital projects, supplements and other added-value pages in the magazine.

This is a junior position, but as you grow and develop into the role you will receive comprehensive training in all aspects of sub-editing so that you will be able to take on more responsibility and become an integral part of the team. You will learn how a magazine is put together and how that integrates with digital platforms, and appreciate the importance of your role across the magazine, website and app.

As your role as a Junior Sub-editor you will;

Liaise regularly with each department – the art and picture desks; the commissioning editors and forward planning department; listings and the radio desk; the TV editor and her team; the web and app teams
Write imaginative headlines, sells and captions appropriate to each piece you work on, especially with reference to SEO, bearing in mind the subject of the feature and what RT readers expect, be it on the website, app or magazine.
Be aware of the appropriate tone needed for each piece and show sensitivity to issues relating to the use of offensive language and to potential libels. You will also need to make accuracy your watchword
Use your writing skills to produce programme previews for TV and radio shows across the app, website and magazine. We’re looking for informative, well-written copy that engages our audience across all platforms
Support the day-to-day needs of the subs’ desk, ensuring that all copy you are given to work on meets the highest standards and conforms to house style – while meeting deadlines
Check copy for grammar and spelling, factual accuracy, legal issues, pitch/tone, sense and house style and maintain the highest standards
Cut copy to length, while retaining all the key points and maintaining the writer’s voice
Make changes to heads, sells and body copy of features as directed by the editor, executive editor, commissioning editor, TV editor or chief sub.

Requirements

A passion for sub-editing and a genuine interest in pursuing a career within production-editing
Excellent sub-editing, proof-reading, grammar skill
Excellent InDesign skills are essential
Knowledge of writing SEO headlines
Competence in creating, shaping and styling copy and activities to strict deadlines
Ability to prioritise and work using initiative to meet strict deadlines
Ability to contribute ideas, communicate and help create a productive team environment
A familiarity with the production process from start to finish
Knowledge of basic magazine law
An appreciation of the brand and editorial values
Good planner and organiser. Assuming responsibility and understanding when there are peaks and troughs in workload
Accurately scopes out length and difficulty of projects/tasks.
Organises work and resources to meet deadlines, uses initiative, measures performance against goals and evaluates results
