The Independent Record of Helena, Montana a Lee Enterprises, Inc. publication is seeking a full-time reporter to cover local government. There will also be opportunities to work alongside and collaborate with Lee Montana’s state news bureau, which keeps a close eye on happenings at the Capitol. The successful candidate will also cover a variety of stories and breaking news related to public works, as well as general assignments in Montana’s increasingly diverse and vibrant capital city.
We’re looking for a self-starter who can present complex issues in easy-to-follow narrative form, and supplement coverage with local video. The ideal candidate is someone who will find the story behind the story; someone who doesn’t wait for a press conference to get the news. We’re looking for a reporter who will dig deeper than meeting coverage and develop sources to stay ahead of developing stories.
Preference will be given to candidates with a year or more experience and a degree in journalism or a related field. A valid driver’s license and current proof of insurance is required.
On days off, Helena is tough to beat for those who enjoy spending time outdoors. You’ll have your pick of public lands, national forests, hiking trails, lakes and blue-ribbon trout streams within driving distance and ready to explore. Helena is also driving distance from cities like Missoula and Bozeman, and Glacier and Yellowstone national parks.
