The Indiana Citizen, a nonpartisan, nonprofit news and information platform focused on the civic health of Indiana, is continuing its search for a full-time reporter on issues of racial justice in our state. For this position, The Indiana Citizen will partner with the Indianapolis Recorder, the nation’s fourth-oldest surviving African American newspaper and a leading voice for the Black community in Indianapolis. This reporting beat will explore how policy at all levels of government impacts the pursuit of racial justice in our state, with a specific focus on the Indiana General Assembly, the Indianapolis City-County Council, and issues in the 2022 state and 2023 municipal elections. Possible coverage areas include voting rights, school curriculum, public transportation, police-community relations, and the criminal justice system. We want a reporter who will pursue exclusive stories, know how to multitask between daily breaking news and long-form investigations, and write with sweep and authority. Candidates should have experience in using data in their reporting and a gift for storytelling. The ideal candidate would have a demonstrated consistency in producing exclusive, policy-shaping enterprise stories on racial justice issues. A successful candidate could become the Editor in Chief of The Indiana Citizen upon the retirement of our founding editor.
