Inside Climate News is seeking an experienced newsletter writer to report, write and compile our popular Today’s Climate newsletter. The successful applicant for this position will produce multiple newsletters each week that are written with voice and flair, include a modicum of original reporting and aggregate top climate news and features from around the United States and the world. This journalist will work remotely from a city or community of his, her or their choice in the U.S.

Job Summary

This is a demanding position that requires sound reporting ability, stylish and fluid writing skills on tight deadlines, and a commitment to fairness and accuracy. The successful applicant must read widely about climate change and the environment and possess a sophisticated understanding of climate politics, policy, trends and news events in order to provide readers with a robust sampling of ongoing events. Our newsletter writer also frequently writes original new stories and features, if time and inclination allow.

Qualifications

This reporter will need to be a self-starter and team player in a newsroom where collegiality and kindness are core values. These additional qualifications, or their equivalents, are essential:

A minimum of two to five years reporting and writing experience, including reporting and writing newsletters. This can include experience gained as a student journalist, with clips that demonstrate an ability to produce a regular newsletter that includes a take on the day’s events and aggregation of climate and environmental news across the media. More experience would be a plus; candidates with slightly less experience but a demonstrated fire in the belly for covering climate and writing stylishly in the newsletter format will be considered.
Knowledge of climate change politics and policy, and an ability to track extreme weather events and other breaking news related to climate change, are essential. A solid work ethic and a collaborative attitude are also musts in a newsroom where collegiality, teamwork and kindness are cultural hallmarks.

Our News Organization

Founded in 2007, Inside Climate News is an independent, nonprofit, non-partisan news organization covering the biggest crisis facing our planet. With nearly 30 full-time staff members, we operate one of the largest and most influential environmental newsrooms in the country.

We have a nucleus in New York, a presence in Washington D.C., and staff working from California to Florida, in Texas, Alabama and Kentucky, Colorado, Ohio and Massachusetts. Good ideas propel the operation, wherever they originate.

As part of its work in the public interest, ICN is establishing a collaborative national reporting network, strengthening the practice of climate and environmental justice journalism and training the next generation of journalists.

We have earned national recognition for our work and many of the most prestigious awards in journalism, including the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting (2013) and recognition as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service (2016).

Compensation

Salary range: $55,000-$70,000 per year, commensurate with experience. Benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision insurance plans; 401k matching; and generous paid time off.
