Inside Higher Ed, a thriving national online publication covering the complex and compelling world of higher education, seeks an experienced, enterprising reporter to cover the finances, business practices, management and governance of colleges and universities across the U.S. The world of higher education is under stress as student demographics change and enrollment pressures mount. At the same time, narratives about the high cost of college proliferate, discussions of student debt levels stoke public dissatisfaction, politicians face fiscal constraints, and a long-empowered generation of campus leaders ages. This position covers topics such as campus closures, financial aid, affordability, business strategies, state funding for higher education and power struggles between boards, presidents and faculty members. An ability to look beyond the numbers, telling readers who business and leadership issues affect, is critical. Analysis, storytelling and adding context — telling readers the “so what” and seeing how a single story fits into a bigger picture — is key to our coverage. Applicants should have three or more years of work as a reporter in a professional newsroom. The ability to juggle multiple assignments, cultivate sources and take initiative is a must. Experience covering business, leadership or politics is a plus.
