Big Tech Fellow (Jan 2024)

Insider’s Big Tech team is hiring an Emerging Tech Fellow to report on the future of tech.

The Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.

The Role & Team:

Our Big Tech team is known for reporting on companies like Meta, Google, Amazon, and Apple and their vast impacts on society and the business world, is adding an Emerging Tech Fellow.

In this role, you will report out an emergent and future tech beat, this will include covering and working on stories identifying hot startups, tech trends, and new tech being created by the Big Tech companies the team already covers. Your stories will unearth what’s next in the tech industry and seeks to answer what the near future looks like inside tech companies.

Beyond companies' new products and offerings, you aim to tell readers how technology will shape the future and solve problems. You can also work on stories that are a hallmark of the Big Tech desk, like Power Players lists, Leavers and Joiners, and salary stories.

This role reports directly to the Deputy Tech Editor and sits on the Big Tech desk.

Key Responsibilities:

Research, source, and report on emerging tech trends that will have an impact on the future.
Familiarize yourself with and report on the research and development teams at big tech companies.
Work on lists and salary stories weekly.
File at least three stories per week

The ideal candidate has:

Demonstrable knowledge of the tech industry
Previous experience with research, reporting/sourcing and writing
Strong time management skills
Has experience turning tips and insights into stories
An ability to cut through jargon, and a willingness to learn

Insider is a flexible workplace when it comes to remote work, but an important part of the fellowship is being a part of the newsroom in person for learning opportunities. Fellows are asked to come into our offices in New York City/London/LA / San Francisco at least two days a week.
Salary & Benefits:

Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
PTO and paid holidays
Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
