Insider is hiring a paid U.S.-based editorial fellow to join the Business News desk in January 2024.
Our mission is to inform and inspire the digital generation and become the most influential and loved journalism company. At Insider, we aim to cover the people, companies, and ideas changing our world. Our team members embody and uphold Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.
The Role & Team:
The Business News desk covers the most compelling and impactful business stories of the day across a variety of industries, including tech, retail, and transportation.
The Business News Fellow will focus on major companies like Amazon, Meta, Tesla, Apple, and more, but may also write about travel, real estate, business personalities, innovations like 3D-printed homes, and the latest trends emerging on TikTok. They will spend their time doing meaningful work: researching, writing, pitching, and interviewing.
The Tech/Trending Business News Fellow will report directly to Deputy Editor Steven Tweedie, and the role is based out of our New York City office.
Note: Insider is a flexible workplace when it comes to remote work, but an important part of the fellowship is being a part of the newsroom in person for learning opportunities. Fellows are asked to come into our offices at least two days a week.
Key Responsibilities:
Report and write daily stories assigned from editor in a timely manner
Conduct interviews and pitch explainers and other story formats, as required
Produce stories that are accurate, properly researched, error-free, and in line with Insider reporting standards
Hone SEO best practices and become adept at Insider’s style of headline writing
The ideal candidate:
Is eager to cover the world’s most fascinating companies and the people who run them, especially in the tech industry
Is creative and willing to experiment with different story formats
Enjoys reporting and developing new sources
Is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
Pays close attention to detail and delivers clean, accurate copy
Has a basic understanding of how corporations conduct business and grow
Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:
A passion for digital storytelling, voracious reading habits, and familiarity with digital and social media
Experience reporting and writing (school publications are great!)
Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
Solid proofreading/copy editing skills and light HTML/Photoshop experience
Salary & Benefits:
The Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.
Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
PTO and paid holidays
Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
Please apply with a resume and cover letter and specify why you're interested in working on this team. Applications close on Saturday, November 4th.
