Insider Inc. launched a bureau in Singapore in January 2021 and has since grown to a team of 12 journalists working across news, business, lifestyle, and audience growth desks. We’re looking for a deputy bureau chief to join the team in a hands-on, editorial-focused role that will involve all facets of running an international bureau. This role will report to the bureau chief. The candidate must be based in Singapore or be willing to relocate to Singapore.
The deputy bureau chief will function as part of the bureau’s leadership team. Your core responsibilities will be editorial in nature: We will look to you to drive the global, 24-hour news cycle forward, and to spot and assign feature-length work. You’ll be editing drafts, mentoring editors and reporters, and contributing your own reporting to create maximum impact. You’ll be looking at data and metrics to help inform story decisions, and creating systems to help us grow with stability and sustainability in mind. Deep technical experience reporting on topics related to tech, finance, and business beats preferred.
Key responsibilities:
Work with editors across desks to drive the global daily news cycle forward
Commission high-touch features and analyses from across the bureau and freelance writers, largely focused on business, news, and lifestyle in Asia
Help the bureau’s leadership team implement and maintain editorial standards
Identify system weaknesses before they become problems, and devise solutions
Support the bureau chief in her day-to-day role
The ideal candidate:
Has experience reporting or running a desk in a newsroom
Has a track record of reporting or running ambitious, step-back stories that required a high level of coordination or communication
Has worked as a reporter or editor on tech or business beats
Is excited about leading the charge, but isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty
Is flexible and excited by fast-paced, frequently changing work environments
Has experience in and is passionate about mentoring journalists
Is a systems thinker who thrives in scenarios where they are asked to create structure
