Insider is hiring a paid US-based reporting fellow to join our Finance team in January 2024.
Our mission is to inform and inspire the digital generation and become the most influential and loved journalism company. At Insider, we aim to cover the people, companies, and ideas changing our world. Our team members embody and uphold Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.
The Role & Team:
Insider’s finance desk reports on the real-life world of “Industry”: investment banking. The reporting fellow will help contribute stories about the people and culture of this secretive and powerful industry, covering recruiting, internships, compensation, power players, and rising stars.
The finance reporting fellow will spend their time doing meaningful work: researching, writing, pitching, and contributing to features — even possibly breaking news. They’ll work on stories like:
Want to look like a rainmaker? Wall Street's wardrobe whisperer offers her top 19 do's and don'ts to nail the partner look.
Since David Solomon became Goldman Sachs CEO, dozens of partners have left. See the running list here.
What recession? JPMorgan is growing headcount and standing firm on its plans to spend big on tech despite its own CEO's recession warnings.
The Finance Reporting Fellow will report directly to Senior Editor Kaja Whitehouse, and the role is based out of our New York City office.
Note: Insider is a flexible workplace when it comes to remote work, but an important part of the fellowship is being a part of the newsroom in person for learning opportunities. Fellows are asked to come into our offices at least two days a week.
Key Responsibilities:
Listen to speeches/interviews by industry power players for potential news nuggets
Keep track of popular Wall Street social media sites and blogs for potential new nuggets
Work with more senior reporters to conduct research and interviews for stories
Help more senior reporters with cold outreach on LinkedIn
The ideal candidate has:
A background in journalism, writing, and reporting online
Interest in learning about the secretive culture of M&A dealmaking and lending and hedge funds
Unafraid to ask probing questions of powerful people and peers in the industry
A willingness to take the initiative to make calls and chase down interviews
Enthusiasm for breaking down complex topics for our audience
Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:
A passion for digital storytelling, voracious reading habits, and familiarity with digital and social media
Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced global team
A self-starter attitude and excellent organizational skills
Solid proofreading/copy editing skills and light HTML/Photoshop experience
Salary & Benefits:
The Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.
Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
PTO and paid holidays
Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
Please apply with a resume and cover letter and specify why you're interested in working on this team. Applications close on Saturday, November 4th.
