Insider Inc. is hiring a paid U.S.-based editorial fellow to join the Personal Finance Insider (PFI) team in January 2024.
Our mission is to inform and inspire the digital generation and become the most influential and loved journalism company. At Insider, we aim to cover the people, companies, and ideas changing our world. Our team members embody and uphold Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.
The Role & Team:
PFI produces service journalism about money. We help our readers choose the right bank accounts, save more for retirement, pay off their student loans, buy their first homes, and more. We value creativity, accountability, and diversity of ideas and opinions.
As a PFI Fellow, you will work with PFI’s senior editor to assist with updates to our existing coverage, with a focus on banking content. You will help keep our coverage relevant as rates and products change, and may also be called upon to assist with monthly guide re-ups for banking and other coverage areas. While there will be some opportunity to write, a good portion of your time will be spent on refreshing existing articles.
The fellow will help our coverage reach more readers by optimizing our stories for search. This role is a great opportunity for an early-career journalist to learn more about SEO and to develop skills that are essential to working in service journalism.
This PFI Fellow will report directly to Senior Editor Laura Grace Tarpley, and the role is based out of our New York City office.
Note: Insider is a flexible workplace when it comes to remote work, but an important part of the fellowship is being a part of the newsroom in person for learning opportunities. Fellows are asked to come into our offices at least two days a week.
Key Responsibilities:
Work with senior editor and banking reporter to identify and implement updates to key guides and reviews
Communicate with our compliance team to ensure our coverage reflects the latest interest rates and product details
Assist with updates and coverage for other coverage areas (such as insurance, loans, and investing) as needed
Write new articles to fill coverage gaps as needed
The ideal candidate has:
A background in journalism, writing/editing, and reporting online
Some knowledge of or interest in learning about credit
Drive to help readers make sense of complicated financial products and concepts
Commitment to fair and inclusive storytelling
Commitment to listening to and learning from the freelance writers and Insider colleagues you work with
Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:
A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
Familiarity with digital and social media
The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
Proofreading and copyediting skills
A love of Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun
Salary & Benefits:
The Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.
Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
PTO and paid holidays
Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
Please apply with a resume and cover letter and specify why you're interested in working on this team. Applications close on Saturday, November 4th.
