Insider is hiring a Speed fellow to join our News division to cover the biggest stories of the moment

The Role & Team:

The Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.

This role reports directly to the senior news editor and sits on the Speed desk. Insider is a flexible workplace when it comes to remote work, but an important part of the fellowship is being a part of the newsroom in person for learning opportunities. Fellows are asked to come into our offices in New York City/SF/LA at least two days a week.

Key Responsibilities:

Drive trending news forward with memorable stories, interesting peels, and the most captivating angles.
Execute speedy original reporting like: making phone calls, talking to the major players, and getting fast reactions.
Answer the questions that readers want to know in your stories, like: What does this mean? Why should I care? Who does this affect?
Advance the biggest stories of the day with both lightning-fast reporting and smart, value-added aggregation that readers love.

The ideal candidate has:

Experience reporting and writing (school publications are great)
Demonstrable knowledge of writing accurately at a fast pace
Previous experience with fact-checking and objective news writing
The confidence to call sources when reporting a story and move breaking news stories forward
A passion for covering general domestic and global news on any topic
A natural curiosity about what’s happening in your own backyard and around the world
A creative mindset to find fascinating angles on stories that other outlets are missing

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:

A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
Familiarity with digital and social media
The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
Proofreading and copyediting skills
A love of Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun

Salary & Benefits:

Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
PTO and paid holidays
Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
