Insider is hiring a Health Fellow to join our Health Team to cover Health and Wellness news.

The Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.

The Role & Team:

As a Health Fellow, you will be covering breaking health news as well as researching, pitching, reporting, and writing health-related stories that aren’t time sensitive. This US-based role will run from January to July 2024.

Insider’s Health team covers a wide range of topics, including fitness, nutrition, anti-aging, medications and supplements, sex and relationships, public health, and more. We cover these stories in a range of formats, from first-person stories to quick news posts and longer features. Our style is smart, conversational, and geared toward a general audience.

This role reports directly to the Senior Health Editor and sits on the Health Desk.

Key Responsibilities:

Pitch daily stories on health trends and news that would appeal to an Insider audience
Conduct interviews and produce stories that are accurate and well-researched, with a conversational framing and tone
Write 3-4 stories a week, ranging from quick turnaround stories to more deeply reported pieces
Collaborate with members of the team and in the broader newsroom larger projects

The ideal candidate has:

Experience reporting and writing (university publications are great)
Demonstrable knowledge of fact-checking, proofreading, and objective news writing
An interest in general health news and trends
Familiarity with digital and social media
An eagerness to learn
The flexibility to take assignments on a broad range of topics and work collaboratively with a fast-paced team

All of our editorial fellows should have:

A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
Familiarity with digital and social media
The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
Proofreading and copyediting skills
A love of Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun

Salary & Benefits:

Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
PTO and paid holidays
Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment

Insider is a flexible workplace when it comes to remote work, but an important part of the fellowship is being a part of the newsroom in person for learning opportunities. Fellows are asked to come into our offices in New York City/London/LA/ San Fransisco at least two days a week.
