POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Globe and Mail is seeking a highly motivated Design Editor with a passion for editorial design and visual storytelling. This role will focus on designing pages across a variety of print sections and magazine products, working closely with editors, photographers, and illustrators to craft compelling visual narratives that enhance our journalism.
The Globe and Mail’s visuals team is a multidisciplinary group of designers, developers, photo editors, data journalists and graphic artists. We work collaboratively across all aspects of The Globe’s coverage on everything from daily news files to long-term investigative projects.
The successful candidate will have strong design instincts, exceptional typographic skills, and an eye for detail, ensuring that pages are both engaging and easy to navigate. They will be unflappable under daily deadline pressures and comfortable working independently as well as in a collaborative newsroom setting.
QUALIFICATIONS:
3+ years of experience in editorial design, preferably in a newsroom or magazine setting.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Knowledge of StiboDX’s Cue print software would be an asset.
Familiarity with news and feature storytelling, including experience designing for a mix of breaking news, features, opinion, investigations, and magazine-style narratives.
Experience collaborating with editors, photographers, illustrators, and digital teams to craft cohesive visual packages.
Ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
Experience working with print production processes, including prepress and color correction, close cropping.
Knowledge of typography, grid systems, and hierarchy in print design to enhance readability and engagement.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to balance multiple assignments simultaneously.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design pages across a variety of print sections and magazine products
Collaborate with editors across the newsroom to craft compelling visual narratives
Ensure designs align with The Globe’s visual identity while bringing fresh, creative approaches to special projects
Apply strong typographic and layout principles to enhance readability and engagement
Manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom environment
Participate in editorial planning meetings to offer creative input and identify design opportunities
Advocate for the power of strong design in storytelling and contribute to ongoing discussions about newsroom visual strategy
