Lead 5 News' next-day and further ahead planning for TV and digital. This is a leading editorial role in the 5 News team, planning future coverage and news events, identifying and arranging stories and overseeing the work of Assistant News Editors on the planning team. An understanding of the 5 News agenda is crucial as well as the ability to spot distinctive and exclusive content. Knowledge of social media and driving digital content is a key part of the role.

Key Responsibilities:

Plan future coverage and news events for all 5 News programmes and digital
Drive and shape the news agenda for 5 News programmes and digital
Take the leading role in planning the next day's stories and manage the coverage editorial diary
Identify and pursue stories, filming locations, interviews and contributors for on the day and further ahead coverage
Find and secure distinctive and exclusive stories, interviews and filming opportunities
Plan resources such as cameras and crews to ensure all stories are adequately covered. Brief and deploy newsgathering staff
Present and lead next-day editorial planning meetings
Plan and manage a variety of special projects
Identify and create opportunities for digital content and work with the news desk and Digital Producer
Write a clear and concise handover for the following day's team, including the News Editor, Programme Editor and senior managers
Make informed legal and health and safety judgements
Work closely with the Planning Editor on all aspects of planned stories
Oversee the work of junior staff and freelancers as well as offering support and guidance
Ability to cover News Editor and Planning Editor shifts when required
Ability to work in the field covering stories across the UK or abroad if required

Excellent journalistic judgement, contacts and flair for identifying stories
Excellent research skills and ability to find and identify exclusive and distinctive content
Ability to deal with teams in the field in the UK and abroad
Good knowledge of newsgathering infrastructure and digital technology
Good knowledge of Ofcom regulations and the ITN compliance manual
Awareness of Health and Safety requirements
Awareness and understanding of the financial implications of all decision making
