Reporter. Join an energetic news team in a tight-knit Southeast Alaska community.

Ketchikan, which is on Revillagigedo Island, is nestled at the base of steep mountains along the inside waters of the North Pacific. It is the first stop for jets, ferries, tugs, barges and cruise ships that carry most of the people and freight into the Southeast region.

Community members lead Ketchikan’s three municipal governments and two federally recognized tribal governments. These members are independent-minded and often engage rigorously with elected leaders.

The Daily News readership includes other communities — the Indigenous City of Saxman, Metlakatla Indian Community on Annette Island and about a dozen cities and towns on Prince of Wales Island.

The area’s fishermen harvest Pacific salmon, halibut, crab, oysters and sea cucumbers, among other things. The timber industry is mostly shuttered, but it has been replaced with a vibrant cruise ship season in the spring and summer.

Our neighbors are our sources in a small city. So, we develop close, accountable and, oftentimes, delightful relationships with them and enjoy their talents as artists, musicians and athletes in a wide range of regular events. Fan favorites include the annual “Blueberry Arts Festival,” the “Wearable Arts Show,” and Ketchikan High School sports.

As reporters in essentially a big town of about 13,000 year-round residents, we study a microcosm of the many modern-day challenges that people face throughout the nation and around the world. Our readers’ interests include shifting industries, public school funding, food sovereignty, affordable housing, transportation opportunities and other economic infrastructure, globalization and climate change effects. We study them all and report factual information, while getting involved with the community in ways that spark our creativity and interests. It’s awesome living and working here!
